Dental Care = Cleaning, Scaling and Polishing
A minty fresh breath in one appointment
Teeth Cleaning
Everyone understands that your teeth are an important part of your oral health, and teeth cleaning at the dentist is paramount in order to maintain a great smile and healthy teeth.
Tooth decay is caused by plaque, which is the thin layer of sticky germs that reside on your teeth. These germs feed on sugar, so when you eat sugary foods or drinks, the germs in the turn it in to an acidic substance which, over time, can damage your teeth and lead to decay.
When plaque is left to build-up, it calcifies and becomes tartar, which is a hard substance that can only be removed by a dentist. To remove plaque and tartar at your dental teeth cleaning appointment, your dentist will ‘scale’ your teeth.
Scaling is often the part of a teeth cleaning appointment that patients dislike, due to the high pitched scraping noise a manual scaler makes when coming in contact with the tooth. However, to make our patients as comfortable as possible, here at Dentistry on Coolum, we use an advanced ultrasonic scaling tool for our teeth scaling and teeth cleaning. Read on to hear about the benefits of ultrasonic scaling!
Ultrasonic Teeth Scaling
Ultrasonic teeth scaling tools are named for the high-frequency vibrations they emit, which is how they scale and clean the teeth. The incredibly fast rate of these ultrasonic vibrations allows the plaque and tartar to be removed from the teeth in a fast, effective and painless treatment. In conjunction with this, the ultrasonic scaler also sprays water as it vibrates to aid in knocking plaque and tartar off.
Another benefit of ultrasonic scaling is that the tool has a very small tip size, which enables your dentist to dislodge build-up from the smallest nooks and crannies in your teeth. Even better –it doesn’t make any unpleasant scraping noise!
Teeth Polishing
Now that the plaque and tartar are removed, it is time for polishing; the last step of your teeth cleaning. Teeth polishing removes stains from your teeth, making them shiny and bright, however, it isn’t just done for the cosmetic benefits!
Teeth polishing also helps to prevent gum disease by removing patches of rough texture or unevenness on the teeth, smoothing out any little imperfections on the surface to aid in preventing future plaque accumulation.
Preventing Periodontitis (Gum Disease)
Just as is the case with your teeth, when plaque builds up on your gums, it can harden over time, leading to tartar or calculus build-up. This build-up can irritate the gums causing inflammation, discomfort and sometimes infections. Untreated tartar build-ups are the primary cause of gum disease, known as periodontitis. Periodontitis can lead to bone infections, which are very painful, and can result in the loss of teeth.
Our experienced dentists will help remove these build-ups above the gums using our advanced ultrasonic scaling tools. Tartar deposits under the gums may require additional treatment and our dentists will advise you at your examination appointment.
